If you are attending ACHCU Academy in Dallas, TX on March 3rd-5th, you will not have double vision. What you will have, is a double dose of home health and hospice compliance content presented by Joe Osentoski, RN, Senior Consultant.
Monday March 3rd starts things off with "Hospice: Making Lemonade." This addresses the too often neglected area of viewing charts from a compliance and payment perspective. This presentation covers the medical review environment, risks of each review, and how to respond to each via self-assessment activity to improve daily charting and minimize denials.
Monday March 3rd is a home health presentation, "Home Health: Icebergs and ADRs." Medical Review and ADRs are like icebergs: the real risk is hidden below the surface of the request. Taking preventive measures ("dodging icebergs") and knowing how to deal with medical review and appeals ("pumping the water and filling the lifeboats") are paramount to successful outcomes. Knowledge of the CMS (and Medicare Advantage) review and appeals process is the key to minimizing the harm from a review.
Tuesday March 4th continues home health content with "Home Health: HI Before AI." "Garbage in equals garbage out" is a well-known phrase related to use of computers. But this also applies to charting. While AI makes promises for improved charting, outcomes, and care management, its decisions are based on human input into the record. Staff knowledge of what needs to be documented provides a solid foundation for any AI to assist and improve. If your staff don't know what to chart; AI will not fix it. Give AI a chance to succeed!
Wednesday March 5th is back to hospice covering "Hospice: Icebergs and ADRs." Similar to the home health version, this presentation demonstrates how Medical Review and ADRs are like icebergs: dangerous with many hidden risks. Taking preventive measures and knowing how to effectively deal with ADRs and appeals are needed for successful outcomes. Knowledge of the CMS review and appeals process is an important key to minimizing any harm from a review. Prevention is best, but knowledge to negotiate the review to avoid the arduous appeals process will reap many benefits for the agency.
"The least harmful mistake is the one you never made." Learn from others' issues to keep your agency compliant and successful.
We hope to "see you" at ACH "CU" Academy
